Dramatically converted former bank building, with gleaming chandeliers in impressive soaring bar, well kept Fullers beers and tasty food

This extraordinary Grade I-listed Italianate building rarely fails to impress first- (or even second-) time visitors. It was once a subsidiary branch of the Bank of England and the splendid spacious bar has three gleaming chandeliers hanging from an exquisitely plastered ceiling that soars above an unusually tall island bar counter crowned with a clock. The end wall has huge paintings and murals that look like 18th-c depictions of Justice, but, in fact, feature members of the Fuller, Smith and Turner families, who set up the brewery that owns the pub. There are well polished dark wooden furnishings, luxurious curtains swagging massive windows, plenty of framed prints and, despite the grandeur, some surprisingly cosy corners, with screens between tables creating an unexpectedly intimate feel. The quieter galleried section upstairs offers a bird's-eye view of the action; some smaller rooms (used mainly for functions) open off. Fullers ESB, London Pride nd Olivers Island and a guest such as Dark Star Hophead on handpump alongside a good choice of malt whiskies and a dozen wines by the glass. At lunchtime, the background music is generally classical or easy listening; it's louder and livelier in the evenings. There's also a garden with seats (one of the few pubs in the area to have one).
