Popular inn with welcoming owners, attractive décor, real ales and fine views; bedrooms

A simple country local, this was once a smugglers' lookout. The unspoilt little rooms have cushioned wall and window seats, a few tub chairs, old photos of the pub, jugs hanging from beams and a Rayburn - a bonus on chilly days. Otter Bitter and a guest from Cerne Abbas or Copper Street on handpump and nine wines by the glass. The dining area has oak beams and timber uprights, quite a mix of tables and chairs, some horse tack and a woodburning stove. Two smaller rooms lead off from here. There are lovely views of the downs and coast from seats on the back terrace and in the garden. Comfortable, light bedrooms look over the grounds and breakfasts are enjoyable. The steep lane outside continues up Eggardon Hill, one of the highest points in the region.

What the licensee says

We pride ourselves on being a friendly country pub serving home made food and a good selection of drinks. We source our produce locally where ever possible. We probably have the best beer garden in west dorset come and enjoy our cosy snug bar with roaring fires in the winter.

Friendly, great location, helpful. The lasagne was rather ordinary, not browned nor crisp on top which disappointed. Venison in suet case fine but could not be distinguished from beef. Chicken and leak (?) pie was a hit. Would come again, perhaps the catering had a slightly off day.
