18th-c coaching inn with accomplished cooking, attentive service and a fine choice of drinks; boutique-style bedrooms

This is a lovely, handsome old inn and our readers enjoy their visits very much. The beamed bar area has old-fashioned seats facing a warming log fire, a Jacobean oak settle, a grandfather clock, brass hunting horns and old farm tools and black and white pictures of Romaldkirk on the walls. Black Sheep, Marstons Wainwright and Village Brewer White Boar Bitter on handpump, seven wines by the glass from a good list, 20 malt whiskies and 16 gins. Another room has elegant pale oak country chairs and stools by a woodburning stove and there's an oak-panelled restaurant; background music. Picnic-sets line the front terrace that facing the village green where you can still see the original stocks and water pump. If you stay in the comfortable, well equipped bedrooms (in the main building, the courtyard or Monk's Cottage), the owners provide an in-house guide for days out in the area, and a Walking in Teesdale book. Disabled access. The village church is interesting and the exceptional Bowes Museum and High Force waterfall are both nearby.
