Wonderful historic building, with unique Crypt bar, cosy dining rooms and spacious character restaurant; comfortable, well equipped bedrooms

?Exceptional', ?superb' and ?just wonderful'. These are just a few comments from our readers who have loved their visits here, and it is indeed a special place. It was built as a guest house in 1235 for the neighbouring Premonstratensian monastery and the architecture is remarkable. The unique Crypt bar is a medieval vaulted room sculpted by thick stone walls, lit by candlelight and with family crests on the ceiling. There are high wooden stools by wall shelves and against the armour-plated counter, cushioned settles and plush stools around a few little tables, with Hadrian Border Tyneside Blonde, Wylam Red Kite and Lord Crewe Brew (named for the pub from Wylam) on handpump, 14 wines by the glass, ten malt whiskies and a farm cider; background music and board games. One character sitting area has a leather sofa and two big tartan armchairs on flagstones in front of a large open fire, while the grand yet informal restaurant features a fine old wooden floor, cushioned wall seating and leather-cushioned dining chairs around oak-topped tables, fresh flowers, antlers on the walls and a large central candelabra. It's a real treat to stay here in bedrooms that range from cosy to luxury suites. Derwent Reservoir is nearby.
