Welcoming old inn that focuses on real ale and conversation; bedrooms

This unchanging rural gem has been welcoming travellers since 1750 and has been run by the same kindly landlady for over 40 years. The small main bar is relaxed and pubby with chatty locals, a roaring coal fire, antique settles on tiles or built into panelling, four slate-topped tables and shuttered mullioned windows. Another room has built-in cushioned pews on oak parquet and a small woodburning stove; a third has more pews, low beams and big landscape prints. In casks behind a modest wooden counter are five well kept ales including Whim Hartington IPA and four guests from breweries such as Abbeydale, Blue Monkey, Burton Bridge, Peak, Shardlow, Storm and Thornbridge; french wines and farm cider too. There are two pub dogs; the newfoundland is confined but does not like other dogs on her patch. Outside you'll find a good-sized garden, a couple of benches at the front and a shop in what used to be the stable. Bedrooms are comfortable, and readers enjoy the good breakfasts served in the stone-flagged kitchen. Dogs may be allowed in bedrooms if they are clean, but not at breakfast; they must be kept on a lead at all times. This hilltop village is very pretty and within walking distance of Carsington Water.
