The good pub guide review

This is an ideal spot for discovering Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall, which are both close by, as is the Monsal Trail cycling/walking path. However, this fine 17th-c coaching inn is a destination on its own. In summer, the hanging baskets at the front are lovely and the delightful garden (with its gurgling fountain) looks straight out to fine Peak District countryside. The low-ceilinged beamed rooms are snug and cosy with log fires and traditional furnishings that include cushioned oak settles, comfortable plush chairs, a longcase clock, old pictures and lots of brass and copper. The tap room, snug and lounge are similarly decorated with cushioned oak benches, old pictures and an impressive collection of brass and copper; the tap room also has a fine display of teapots. Abbeydale Deception, Peak Chatsworth Gold and Swift Nick, Sheffield Crucible Best and Thornbridge Crackendale and Lord Marples on handpump, good wines by the glass, 35 gins, 20 malt whiskies and farm cider; background music. Above the stone fireplace in the lounge is a painting of the Eyre coat of arms.

The good pub guide food review

A good choice of food includes roasted beetroot, roasted fig and goats cheese salad, treacle-cured salmon with soda bread, game pie with seasonal vegetables, local sausages and mash with onion gravy, seared lamb rump with hogget pie and dauphinoise potatoes, shepherd's pie, burger with toppings and onion rings, chicken kiev with coleslaw and frites, and puddings such as apple pie and creme anglaise and Bakewell pudding with ice-cream and fruit compote.
