Wonderfully unspoilt place - like stepping back in time; mullioned windows, 17th-c kitchen range with copper pots, old wall clock, rush-seated chairs and antique settles, beams hung with pewter mugs and shelves lined with embossed Doulton stoneware flagons, also a panelled Georgian room and, to the left of a small hatch-served lobby, a cosy beamed room with stripped settles, scrubbed tables and open fire under huge mantelbeam, Marstons, Thwaites and a guest, decent fair value food; cribbage and dominoes; well behaved children welcome, dogs in bar, benches in small front yard, garden with tables looking out over pastures, open all day Fri-Sun, closed Mon lunchtime

Myself, my wife and 2 young children (ages 6 & 3) rented out a cottage in Brassington, Derbyshire in May '09 and decided to check out the local pub for a pint and a bite to eat one evening. Upon hearing our southern accents, were made to feel very unwelcome by the bar staff and we stared at by the locals and made to feel very uncomfortable. After waiting 45 mins for our meals, my 3 year old son was getting a little restless yet we were astonished when the barlady approached him and told him to "keep the noise down" - how rude! The constant effing and blinding by the locals at the bar was acceptable yet my youngest is shouted at! An absolute disgrace of a place who clearly have no place for southern tourists - avoid it like the plague!

Arrived at 6 mins past 3pm on the first Sunday in August, admittedly 6 minutes past advertised lunchtime,6 of us on bicycles ,youngest aged 10.(Willing to spend ?£60-70 on a lunch-not that the interaction ever got that far). When my husband asked whether they would be willing to serve us anything he was met with rudeness that he felt was almost a point of pride with the bartender. He didn't even feel like asking them to replenish our water bottled-AVOID this place.

Pub has changed hands since negative comments below - really worth going - great food, warm welcome, friendly atmosphere and all the charm of traditional decor and real fires!
