18th-c inn with sympathetically modernised character bars, a two-storey restaurant, excellent modern cooking and thoughtful choice of drinks; bedrooms

Gently civilised and friendly ? and part of the Alscot Estate - this Georgian coaching inn has a good mix of customers and an easy-going atmosphere. The open-plan rooms cleverly manage to create a contemporary feel that fits in well with the many original features: beams, standing timbers, flagstoned or wooden floors and open fires. The bustling bar serves Alscot Ale (named for the pub from North Cotswold), North Cotswold Jumping Jack and Purity Pure UBU on handpump, a dozen wines by the glass and cocktails. The bar is comfortably furnished with a mix of traditional wooden chairs and tables, upholstered sofas, armchairs in front of open fires, high bar chairs by the blue-painted counter and daily papers; background music. The two-storey restaurant is stylish and modern. The bottom floor, with stunning chandeliers, is decorated in soft pastels and silvers and has folding doors leading directly to the terrace, while the top floor has attractive chairs around polished copper tables on dark floorboards, seats on a balcony and panoramic views across the Stour Valley; there's also a private dining room with its own decked area and lawn. An appealing courtyard and gardens have seats and tables looking over water meadows and the lovely valley. The well equipped and comfortable bedrooms are individually decorated and boutique in style.

What the licensee says

Part of the historic Alscot Estate, this 18th century Inn oozes character, an eclectic mix of contemporary and traditional with flag stone floors, low beams and open fires. Candlelit tables, friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere make it a popular venue for leisurely lunches, romantic dinners, family feasts and the perfect weekend retreat. We serve good quality food made from local, fresh and seasonal produce. Our menu is best described as modern British, and a bar and well priced Pre Fixe menu runs along side the a la carte menu. Offers include Champagne Friday served with tasty treats. Our spacious Country Pub garden is ideal for families whilst the beautifully landscaped courtyard garden offers a sophisticated area to relax with a drink or perfect area to dine. The beautiful individually styled bedrooms are ready to welcome guests. Each of the four boutique rooms has been carefully named and influenced in style by properties uniquely associated to Alscot. Owner Emma Holman-West, has applied her experience and keen eye for design, colour and detail combining old with new to transform each room, providing comfortable and stylish accommodation.
