Good Pub Guide Recommended

Enjoyably civilised pub with appealing ancient interior, good carefully sourced food, a great range of drinks and a pretty garden with table service

Our readers have consistently enjoyed this very well run pub for many years, with comments such as ?the kind staff could not do enough for us and we felt very special and valued' and ?in ten years of visiting this lovely pub, we've only got top praise for every aspect of it'. The attractive interior has plenty of signs of the building's venerable age, and is divided into five comfortable areas, each with its own character. These range from the cosy terracotta-painted bar to a light and airy gallery room with antique wood panelling, solid oak floor and contemporary Lloyd Loom chairs. Flagstone floors, stripped or well polished antique or period-style furniture and three good fires (one in an inglenook) add warmth and cosiness. You'll find Hobsons Best and Postmans Knock, Hook Norton Old Hooky and Purity Pure Gold and Pure UBU on handpump and 16 wines (including prosecco, champagne and sweet wine) by the glass; background music. In summer, the virginia creeper-covered exterior is festooned with colourful hanging baskets. The lovely garden has solid teak furniture, a vine-covered terrace, water features and gentle lighting.

One summer 7 years ago we were looking for somewhere to eat that accepted dogs (admittedly only in the garden - so a summer pub for us). The garden really is charming with adequate open and shaded areas for eating. We liked it so much we also go there in all other seasons. Inside It has a wonderful old world charm or you can dine in more modern quarters of the pub. The menu is varied (vegetarians well catered for) but not so extensive that they cannot properly deliver an excellent meal. There is a good wine list and they keep their beers well. We have eaten consistently well and the staff are outstandingly friendly and efficient.
