Traditional character and contemporary touches in comfortably furnished coaching inn; bedrooms

As one of our readers put it: ?This is a lovely place where the original character has been enhanced rather than swept away.' The roomy, charmingly furnished lounge bar has some exposed stone and beams and nice rambling corners with cushioned settles among pleasantly assorted and comfortable seats and leather armchairs; there are tables on flagstones and carpets, animal prints on warm paintwork and both an open fire and a woodburning stove. Friendly, attentive staff serve Hook Norton Hooky and Wickwar Cotswold Way with a guest such as Brains Rev James on handpump, a dozen wines by the glass and summer farm cider. The chocolate labrador is called Cocoa. The simple public bar has darts, pool, a juke box and a TV; background music. There are tables out in the large back garden, with a play area. Bedrooms are spotlessly kept, quiet and pretty and breakfasts are particularly good.

What the licensee says

Originally built as a coaching inn in 1748, this Grade II listed free house is located in the Cotswolds; an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Eat in the bar with its settles and inglenook fireplace, or the adjoining restaurant, choosing from the seasonal menu or daily specials where favourites include cod and chips served on the Red Lion Times Newspaper. Then, wash it down with real ale or your choice from a carefully selected wine list.If you need somewhere to stay, we have five individually styled en-suite bedrooms to meet your requirements complete with Egyptian cotton bed linen, luxury toiletries and flat screen televisions. Despite many changes over the years, the Red Lion retains the charm and character of a Cotswold country pub. The traditional interior retains the old-world atmosphere with oak beams, log fires and gleaming wood while being brought up to date with a contemporary vibe. https:/www.redlion-longcompton.co.uk/
