Lovely mellow-toned interior, lots to look at and tasty food and drink; bedrooms

After enjoying one of the nearby hill walks, come to this golden-stone inn for refreshment. The various beamed and flagstoned rooms have a pleasing mix of furniture ranging from pews and rustic stools to leather dining chairs around all sorts of tables, rugs on bare boards, shelves of books, candles and a log fire in a big inglenook. Purity Mad Goose, Stratford Upon Avon Stratford Gold, Timothy Taylors Landlord and Wye Valley HPA on handpump, 14 wines by the glass, a fair choice of whiskies and brandies, and local cider; background music and board games. The big back garden has seats under parasols and a colourful herbaceous border. Bedrooms are well equipped and comfortable and the breakfasts highly regarded.

What the licensee says

The Howard Arms is a glorious Cotswold pub, restaurant and bed & breakfast. Peacefully overlooking the old chestnut tree on the green, it lies in the heart of the idyllic village of Ilmington. Inside, the fire crackles and the bar bustles with locals and visitors drinking from our carefully chosen selection of ales, beers and wine. Our award-winning chef has created a menu of top-quality pub favourites alongside imaginative starters, mains and irresistible puddings. There are 8 spoiling bedrooms, full of comfort and character with a hearty breakfast included in the price. The atmosphere is warm and easy-going, and the staff are renowned for their friendliness and efficiency.

Built during Shakespeare's time, if the bard were still around, you would find him with the locals in the Howard Arms.
