Good Pub Guide Recommended

16th-c pub with simple country furnishings, well kept ales, an extensive choice of thai food and seats outside

This ancient and very pretty stone tavern has held a pub licence since 1540, and is the oldest building in the village. From a central entrance passage, low-beamed, character bars lead off with some fine old flagstones and floor tiles and two open fires (one in an inglenook). There are also wheelbacks, stools, rustic seats and tables and built-in wall benches, half-panelled or exposed-stone walls, and plenty of copper kettles, pans and bedwarmers, horse tack and toby jugs. Friendly staff serve Prescott Hill Climb, Sambrooks Junction and Wye Valley Butty Bach on handpump, eight wines by the glass, 18 gins and ten malt whiskies; background music, TV, darts and board games. The little dining room has pale wooden tables and chairs on bare boards. There are a couple of benches on the front cobbles, contemporary seats and tables on a partly covered, raised decked area at the back and picnic-sets on grass; in summer, the flowering baskets and tubs are lovely.
