Good Pub Guide Recommended

Much character in ex-farmhouse with real ales, good wines, well liked food and plenty of outside seating; bedrooms

In a little village of thatched houses, this is a handsome creeper-clad inn with rewarding food and drink. The opened-up bar on the right, full of original charm, has stools against the counter where friendly staff serve Marstons Pedigree, Wells Bombardier and a monthly guest on handpump and 16 wines by the glass. Several informal dining areas take in paintwork ranging from white and light beige to purple, and flooring that includes stripped wooden boards, original red and white tiles and beige carpeting. All manner of pale wooden tables are surrounded by assorted church chairs, high-backed leather dining chairs and armchairs, with comfortable squashy leather sofas and pouffes in front of a log fire. There are hunting pictures, large mirrors, an original old stove and fresh flowers; background music and TV. The back garden has picnic-sets among shrubs and trees, modern tables and chairs out in front under pretty hanging baskets, and a dining courtyard. Eleven of the well equipped, contemporary bedrooms are located in the converted stables and breakfasts are good. The church is of interest and the nearby manor house was once owned by one of the gunpowder plotters.
