Good Pub Guide Recommended

Smart dining pub with attractive modern furnishings, imaginative food, real ales and a great wine choice; good bedrooms

Our readers praise all aspects of this well run, civilised inn, with many of them returning on a regular basis. The extensive open-plan dining bar is carefully laid out to give several distinct-feeling areas: a sofa and easy chairs on flagstones near the serving counter, a couple of armchairs under heavy beams by the big woodburning stove, one sizeable table tucked nicely into a three-sided built-in seat and a lower side room with more beams and cheerful floral wallpaper. Tables are mostly stripped veterans, with high-backed dining chairs, but there are more modern chunky pine tables at the back; also, contemporary artwork (mostly for sale) and daily papers. Friendly staff serve Adnams Ghost Ship, Crouch Vale Brewers Gold, Woodfordes Wherry and a changing guest such as Humpty Dumpty Broadland Sunrise on handpump and Aspall's cider. Wine is a key feature, with 30 by the glass and hundreds more from the glass-walled ?cellar shop' in one corner ? you can buy wine there to take away too. A sheltered flagstoned back terrace has comfortable teak furniture, heaters, big terracotta-coloured parasols and a peaceful view over rolling, lightly wooded countryside. Bedrooms are well equipped and comfortable and breakfasts are first class. This is a pretty village and you'll find many well marked surrounding footpaths. Good disabled access.
