Delightful, old-fashioned bar in smart hotel, with enjoyable bar food and a fine range of drinks; bedrooms

Of course, most customers are here to stay in the comfortable bedrooms and enjoy the particularly good food, but it's the surprisingly pubby and old-fashioned bar that many of our readers enjoy so much. This has mellow polished walls, cushioned oak settles, rush-seat chairs and library seats, and hunting prints and photographs. Coniston Bluebird Bitter, Cumbrian Legendary Loweswater Gold and Hawkshead Bitter on handpump, 16 good wines by the glass from a fine list, 80 malt whiskies and ten gins and ten vodkas all served by friendly, knowledgeable staff. There's a bistro at the front, a formal restaurant at the back overlooking the garden, and several comfortable lounges with log fires, beautiful flower arrangements, fine parquet flooring, antiques and plants. The garden has seats and tables and is surrounded by attractive woodland. Bedrooms are well equipped, comfortable and pretty, and two of them are pet-friendly. There are plenty of walks in all directions.

Very friendly. Comfortable rooms. Dogs allowed. Several local ales in old-fashioned comfortable bar (and home-made potato crisps!). Excellent restaurant (currently closed Mon & Tues) and bistro open daily. Daily weather forecast and packed lunches available for walkers.

Very good early evening meal in bistro. Continues to maintain its standards.
