The good pub guide review

Hunkered against the foot of Mellbreak Fell, this well run, extremely popular 16th-c inn is surrounded by stunning walks and also on the popular C2C cycle route. The main bar has a cosy atmosphere thanks to a roaring log fire, plus low beams and carpeting, comfortably cushioned small settles and pews, partly stripped stone walls, board games and a slate shove-ha'penny board. As well as their own-brewed Cumbrian Legendary Esthwaite Bitter, Langdale, Loweswater Gold, Vanilla Oatmeal Stout and a seasonal guest on handpump, they keep nine wines by the glass and 20 malt whiskies; staff are kind and efficient. The stunning views of the peaks can be enjoyed from picnic-sets on the lawn, from the very attractive covered verandah in front of the building and from one of the rooms off the bar. The 11 newly refurbished bedrooms are comfortable and breakfasts are especially good. Dogs are allowed in the bar only and not during evening food service.

The good pub guide food review

Very nicely cooked food includes quality sandwiches, locally smoked chicken, serrano ham and parmesan salad with hazelnut pesto, steak and ale pie with home-made chips or mash, venison and black pudding sausage with mustard and whisky cream, spicy vegetable chilli, and puddings such as vegan chocolate brownie, sticky toffee pudding and lemon pannacotta.
