Fine location for this well run, popular inn with busy bar, own-brewed beers, good food and friendly welcome; bedrooms

This is a well run, extremely popular 16th-c inn, surrounded by stunning walks. The main bar has a cosy atmosphere thanks to a roaring log fire, plus low beams and carpeting, comfortably cushioned small settles and pews, partly stripped stone walls, board games and a slate shove-ha'penny board. As well as their own-brewed Cumbrian Legendary Esthwaite Bitter, Langdale, Loweswater Gold, Vanilla Oatmeal Stout and a seasonal guest on handpump, they keep nine wines by the glass and 20 malt whiskies; staff are kind and efficient. The stunning views of the peaks can be enjoyed from picnic-sets on the lawn, from the very attractive covered verandah in front of the building and from the windows in one of the rooms off the bar. Bedrooms are comfortable and breakfasts are especially good. Dogs are allowed only in the bar and not during evening food service.

Excellent refresher after a day on the fells. Esthwaite Bitter and vanilla stout highly recommended. Scone and cream with jam a must if there at teatime (but don't expect to be able to eat a large evening meal later!). Service fast and friendly.
