Good Pub Guide Recommended

Friendly refurbished pub with several connected seating areas, real ales and popular food

There's quite a bustle of customers here, especially at lunchtime when lovers of the outdoors pile in. The beamed main bar has a friendly feel, pubby tables and chairs on light wooden floorboards, modern metal wall lights and pictures on bare stone walls, and Tirril 1823 and a guest such as Wychwood Dirty Tackle on handpump. Steps lead down to a small area with high bar stools around a high drinking table and then upstairs to the restaurant: a light, airy room with big windows, large wrought-iron candelabras hanging from the vaulted ceiling, solid pale wooden tables and chairs, and doors leading to a verandah. At the far end of the main bar, there are yet another couple of small connected bar rooms with darts, games machine, pool, juke box and dominoes; TV and background music. There are views of the fells from the garden. This is under the same ownership as the Highland Drove in Great Salkeld.

Visited this bar on 4th February. Walked a mile from Penrith to reach the Cross Keys as it was advertised in the Good Pub Guide. When we arrived the bar was very busy due to England playing Rugby. There were no seats available but there were three stools at the bar. Two of these were occupied by children between that ages of six and ten who were playing online games. I sat on the the last available stool only to have a local ignoramous complain loudly for my benefit that this was his third son's stool. Said ignoramous then asked another customer to give up his stool for said son leaving my 73 year old husband to stand at the bar. This was all overheard by the male barstaff who chose not to offend said ignoramous. It is a sad state of affairs when three young children are put before paying customers, not to mention the height of bad manners. Also absolutely appalling customer service from staff. This pub does not deserve to be in the Good Pub Guide
