Lively place with a friendly, informal atmosphere, lots of customers, efficient service and tasty food; bedrooms

Usefully open and serving food all day, this is a handsome place at the centre of the village with plenty of customers dropping in and out. The open-plan layout feels even more spacious with plenty of mirrors dotted about and the main bar has wooden tables and chairs on floorboards, a wall seat with attractive scatter cushions, a woodburning stove, suede stools against the panelled counter and a rustic central table with daily papers; background music. Cheddar Potholer, Otter Bitter and a guest beer on handpump, 21 wines by the glass, local gin and two farm ciders are served by quick, friendly staff. At one end of the room, a step leads down to an area with rugs on huge flagstones, a leather chesterfield, armchairs and brass-studded leather chairs, then down another step to more sofas and armchairs. An airy dining room has attractive high-backed chairs, tables set with candles in glass jars and another woodburner. The terrace and lawn have plenty of seats and tables, and the metal furniture among flowering tubs at the front of the building gives a continental feel. Bedrooms are pretty (some are generously proportioned) and breakfasts are good. Disabled access.
