Wonderful views from a large garden, rambling character rooms, real ales and interesting food and an easy-going atmosphere; bedrooms

It's worth coming here for the views alone. From the big, attractive garden there's a magnificent outlook over Corfe Castle and the Purbeck Hills; there's also rustic-style seating and an outside summer kitchen with a jerk shack for caribbean-style food (the landlady is jamaican). Inside, the bar areas and more formal dining room are on several levels with stripped stone and brickwork, flagstones and bare boards, beams and high rafters, seats ranging from sofas and easy chairs through all manner of wooden chairs around tables of varying sizes, and open fires; stairs lead up from the bar to a small minstrels' gallery-like area with sofas facing one another across a table. Butcombe Bitter, Dorset Durdle Door and Jurassic and Otter Bitter on handpump, 11 wines by the glass and local cider; background music and board games. The four bedrooms are attractively decorated, and the surrounding area has many good walks.

What the licensee says

New owners have renovated this 18th Century Inn and introduced new chefs and a new menu. The view from the gorgeous garden is incredible and on a summer's evening with a glass of something cool cannot be beaten. Food has been sourced from the rich Purbeck produce found in the local area; Game from the Encombe Estate, Lobster from Chapman's Pool, Pork, Lamb and Beef from the valley, Scallops from Lulworth Cove and fish from Poole and Bridport. There is a fine selection of ales, ciders, and wine and always a warm welcome with 3 roaring log fires. Children and dogs very welcome. Now with 2 gorgeous letting rooms that have been renovated to a very high standard.
