Good Pub Guide Recommended

Traditional country inn with plenty of dining and drinking space, a friendly welcome, several real ales and creative food; bedrooms

The exceptional food in this fine old place remains one of the main draws, but plenty of customers do come for just a pint and a chat. A small front bar, with a hatch to the kitchen, has tweed-upholstered armchairs and stools on big flagstones around a single table, a woodburning stove surrounded by logs, and drawings of dogs and hunting prints on grey-green walls. Off to the right, a wood-panelled partition creates a cosy area where there are similarly cushioned pews and nice old chairs around various tables on a rug-covered wooden floor, and a couple of window chairs. The main bar, up a couple of steps, has old photographs of the pub and village on pale walls and a marble bar counter where they serve Hawkshead Lakeland Gold, Marstons Wainwright and a guest beer on handpump, a dozen wines by the glass and farm cider. Background music and board games. Staff are helpful and attentive. A two-level restaurant has carpet or wooden flooring, two fireplaces (one with a woodburning stove, the other with a lovely old kitchen range) and hunting prints. Picnic-sets and tables and chairs enjoy far-reaching views. The lovely, comfortable bedrooms (once a post office and two cottages) make a fine base for exploring the area. Do note the lovely church opposite. This is part of the Seafood Pub Company.
