Rather grand old house with smartly pubby atmosphere, top quality food, exceptional wine list, real ales and professional, friendly service; luxury bedrooms

Reports on this elegant manor house remain as warm and enthusiastic as ever; it's a very special place. Many of our readers stay in the lovely bedrooms (several have open fires) which are individually furnished and have beautifully restored bathrooms; breakfasts are excellent. The civilised bar rooms have handsome old wood furnishings, including antique settles, oak gate-leg tables and sonorous clocks, set off beautifully against powder blue walls neatly hung with big appealing prints. The pubby main bar has roaring log fires in attractive stone fireplaces and heavy curtains on sturdy wooden rails; one area has a selection of newspapers and magazines, local maps and guidebooks. There's a piano for anyone who wants to play, and board games. Early evening sees a cheerful bustle that later settles to a more tranquil and relaxing atmosphere. Drinks include a marvellous wine list of around 230 wines with 21 by the glass (reception has a good wine shop), 24 whiskies, eight gins, organic ginger beer, lemonade, fruit juices and Black Sheep, Moorhouses Blond Witch, Timothy Taylors Landlord and Tirril Ullswater Blonde on handpump. The inn is set high on the banks of the River Hodder with spectacular views down the valley into the heart of the Forest of Bowland; the riverside bar and adjacent terrace make the most of this outlook. They own several miles of trout, salmon and sea trout fishing on the River Hodder; picnic hamper on request. Limited disabled access.
