The good pub guide review
New owners have revamped this popular inn, putting extra focus upon the food it offers, with tempting new menus making the most of produce from its own kitchen garden. The bar and dining areas have been repainted in attractive pale and dark greys, and there are new light fittings, blinds and curtains along with some lovely wooden and wrought-iron chairs in the restaurant. To the right of the main entrance is a snug with a sofa and armchairs around an open woodburning stove. To the left is the bar: fine old flagstones, window seats around pine-topped tables, and a carved wooden counter where they serve Bath Gem, Butcombe Original and Otter Ale on handpump, a good number of wines and champagne by the glass, 25 malt whiskies, cocktails and a thoughtful choice of local drinks (cider, vodka, sloe gin, various juices); board games and background music. A two-way woodburning stove also warms the dining room, which has partitions to create snug seating areas. Just off here is a little sitting area serving specialist teas and coffees. The terrace and side lawn make the most of the stunning sunsets. The 11 well equipped bedrooms (including three lodges) have views over peaceful farmland. Dogs are welcome everywhere except the restaurant, and in two of the lodges. Disabled access.
