Good Pub Guide Recommended
Attractive stone pub near Bath and Bristol with plenty of drinking and dining space and riverside garden; stylish bedrooms
Extensively refurbished and smartened up, this is a partly 15th-c stone pub that our readers enjoy very much. The various bars and dining areas have seats ranging from hoopback, bentwood, spindleback and modern leather chairs to fur-draped settles and leather armchairs and sofas, tables are scrubbed wood or beer barrels on bare boards and two woodburning stoves keep everything cosy and warm. Walls of exposed stone or contemporary paintwork are hung with mirrors and modern artwork and décor includes boxing gloves, bowler hat or jam jar lights and books on shelves. Friendly staff serve a beer named for the pub from Great Western plus Bristol Beer Factory Independence and Notorious, Cheddar Potholer and Wild Beer Bibble on handpump, plenty of wines by the glass and a fine choice of spirits from a long, polished elm counter; there's also a separate whisky bar with a copper-topped counter. French windows lead out to a sunken courtyard with steps up to a lawned area and a riverside terrace with a fire pit. The individually styled bedrooms are well equipped and up to date and breakfasts are good. There's plenty to do and see nearby, as well as local reservoir walks. Wheelchair access from back entrance and disabled loos.
