Friendly owners for well run and handsome old stone inn with plenty of character, real ales and first class food

Excellent, inventive food is always a huge draw, but when it's also cooked by the convivial landlord, that's the proverbial cherry on the cake. There's been some refurbishment this year but the bar still has windsor and other pubby chairs around wooden tables on flagstones, a fireplace with a woodburning stove and high chairs by the counter where they keep Exmoor Gold, Gritchie English Lore and Palmers IPA on handpump, 16 wines and prosecco and champagne by the glass, 24 gins and farm cider. Another room has cushioned and other dining chairs, a nice old settle and a wall banquette around a mix of tables on carpeting, fresh flowers and prints and paintings; background music. There are tables and chairs in the pretty walled back garden, which also has raised beds and a greenhouse for growing their salad leaves and herbs.

Lower Wraxall is a small place and devoid of mobile phone reception and Wi-fi - which makes the Long Arms even more worthy of recommendation. Exceptional food but presence of many regulars at the bar means that this is a real pub - not just for foodies Menu isn’t extensive but everything is presented with great attention to detail, and with a twist. I had rump of lamb with haggis which was superb Very friendly and efficient service. Warm atmosphere. Real fire. Couldn’t really ask for more.
