Carefully refurbished and interesting old coaching inn, real ales and good wines, inventive food and seats in courtyard; lovely bedrooms

Until the dissolution of the monasteries in the early 16th-c, this village was owned by Glastonbury Abbey. The handsome old inn has a nicely informal, candlelit bar with various wooden tables and chairs on big quarry tiles, a woodburning stove in a stone fireplace, and stools (much used by locals) against the counter where friendly, helpful staff serve a beer named for the pub (from Keystone), Butcombe Bitter and a couple of guests such as Butcombe, Rare Breed on handpump, several good wines by the glass and a farm cider. Two interconnected dining rooms have brass-studded leather chairs around wooden tables, a log fire with candles in fine clay cups on the mantelpiece above and lots of coaching prints on the walls; quiet background music and board games. There's a mediterranean feeling to the courtyard with its pale green metalwork chairs and tables. Off here, in separate buildings, are the enjoyable, rustic-feeling sitting room with sofas, chairs and tables, smart magazines, a huge mural and vast glass bottles (free films or popular TV programmes are shown here on Sunday evenings), and the grill room, where food is cooked simply on a big open fire overlooked by 18th-c portraits. The bedrooms are smart and stylish and breakfasts are excellent. Do visit the lovely church where the poet Siegfried Sassoon is buried; the walled gardens opposite the inn are very pretty. This is sister pub to the Beckford Arms at Fonthill Gifford (Wiltshire).

Had a wonderful lunch at The Talbot in Mells yesterday; the fish & chips were wonderful and faultless and the staff were attentive but discreet. My only minor comment about the pub, which is insignificant, why have you painted the dining room walls pink and green .... the bar is such a good colour and the dining room would suit a more sophisticated pot of paint .... great lunch and will visit again.

Lovely English country coaching inn with good decor (shame about the ceiling in the restaurant - couldn't afford a plasterer eh?). One major complaint. I eat cmeat, but my wife is vegetarian. The only lunch starter for vegetarians is goat's cheese ad the only main course is goat's cheese as well. Absolutely no choice at all. Who would choose a restaurant knowing they have only one option for each course and they are virtually the same. Prices & quality of other fgood are reasonable and it is very popular with non vegetarians. The setting is wonderful in this village with history and nursery rhyme connections, but would we go back? Not unless they change the menu and how would we know when they have? There are many good pubs in the area giving a wide choice of vegetarian and carnivore options, so why spend more money to find out if the Talbot has changed its ways.
