Ancient place with contemporary design, several eating and drinking areas, a bustling atmosphere, pleasing food and drink, and courtyard seats; bedrooms

Located in a pleasant old town, this has been an inn since 1311. It was last updated a few years ago, and they've managed to blend the ancient and the modern cleverly and effectively. Original beams and walls remain but there are touches of glass, steel, slate and leather throughout. The bar is bustling and convivial with wall banquettes, high tables and chairs dotted here and there, white-painted walls and a strip of blue neon lighting at ground level. Box Steam Golden Bolt, Marstons Wainwright and Ringwood Boondoggle and Fortyniner on handpump, good wines by the glass and a large cocktail list. Stairs lead up to the restaurant with its rather dramatic glass-enclosed mezzanine cube, there are mustard yellow and pale green leather chairs around a mix of tables on big floorboards, high rafters lined with electric candles and a large carved angel on a plinth; background music. A long slate-floored passageway links this main part to a two-roomed snug area with large leather sofas and armchairs and an open fire, and a small, rather cosy dining room. The central courtyard has colourful tables and chairs and a mediterranean feel. Disabled access.

What the licensee says

Located right in the centre of Frome, the Archangel has an excellent reputation for its vibrant, warm hospitality, top quality restaurant food and quirky but first class accommodation.First recorded as an Inn in 1311, The Archangel despite extensive renovations still reveals its medieval history with ancient beams and walls. Modern touches have been added such as suspended glass mezzanine cube, Italian-made mustard yellow chairs and zinc-topped bar.Food is locally sourced and seasonal and we serve some British classics along with seasonal dishes. We cater for private parties and functions in our various rooms. With a large selection of ales, wines, and cocktails the bar is the perfect place to enjoy a vibrant atmosphere. The ten contemporary bedrooms are distinctly quirky with rich purple and gold wallpapers, sumptuous velvet curtains and a mural of an archangel. Features include flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, direct dial telephones, fridges, tea and coffee making facilities, ensuite bathrooms with Bramley bath and body products.
