The good pub guide review

It's not always good news when a pub burns down, but ten years ago the Beckford Arms made the best of it by recreating its Georgian coaching inn stone by stone but brand-new, with its glorious countryside setting unchanged. With well equipped and comfortable bedrooms (and two self-catering lodges) this makes a great base for exploring the area; breakfasts are good and generous. The atmosphere is gently civilised but informal and friendly. The main bar has assorted wooden dining chairs and tables on parquet flooring, a huge fireplace and bar stools beside the counter where they keep an interesting range of drinks ' including Butcombe Bitter, Keystone Phoenix (named for them) and Timothy Taylors Landlord on handpump, 15 wines by the glass, 20 malt whiskies, local farm cider, winter mulled wine and cider, and cocktails such as a bloody mary using home-grown horseradish. The cosy sitting room is stylish with comfortable sofas facing one another across a low table, an appealing built-in window seat among other chairs and tables, and an open fire in a stone fireplace with candles in brass candlesticks and fresh flowers on the mantelpiece. There's also a separate restaurant and private dining room. The mature rambling garden has seats on a brick terrace, hammocks under trees, games for children, a dog bath and boules. This is sister pub to the Bath Arms in Horningsham (also Wiltshire) and the Lord Poulett Arms at Hinton St George and the Talbot in Mells (both in Somerset).

The good pub guide food review

As well as breakfasts (8-9.30am), the enjoyable, imaginative food includes tomato gazpacho with basil sorbet and pine nuts, confit beetroots with goats curd, parley aioli and walnuts, ploughman's, beer-brined chicken breast with spelt risotto and nettle pesto, pan-fried cod with sweetcorn purée and black bean and tomato ragout, 42-day aged rump steak with roasted red peppers and wild garlic butter, and puddings such as lemon parfait with pistachio meringue and rose jelly and rum and caramel affogato.
