The good pub guide review
This beautifully restored country pub has great beers, creative cuisine and a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. Low-beamed rooms ramble around the bar with its bare stone walls, open fires and woodburning stoves (one in a big worn stone fireplace), mixed plain tables and chairs on pale flagstones, armchairs and a sofa in one corner and daily papers. Four steps lead up into a high-raftered area with wood flooring, and there's another separate, smaller room that's ideal for a lunch or dinner party. Also, lots of dog and country prints and more modern pictures, fresh flowers, candles and some quirky, rustic decorations such as a garden-fork door handle, garden-spade beer pumps and so forth. Butcombe Gold and Original, Ramsbury Gold and Stroud Budding Organic Pale Ale on handpump, as well as carefully chosen wines and champagne by the glass and home-made seasonal cocktails; background music and board games. Dogs may get treats and are welcomed everywhere. There are teak seats around cask tables among the weeping willows, a boules piste and a vegetable garden and orchard. Wheelchair access to the front door from the car park, and disabled loos. Sister business the Rectory Hotel is a stone's throw away and provides smart accommodation in 15 lovely rooms and a cottage.
The good pub guide food review
Imaginative, seasonal food using local ingredients includes twice-baked double gloucester soufflé with spinach, raw beef salad with rocket and capers, burrata and tomato salad with basil and olives, roasted cauliflower steak with red pepper and caper salsa, grilled tiger prawns with chilli and garlic butter, flat-iron chicken with chimichurri and fries, and puddings such as double chocolate brownie with vanilla ice-cream and lemon polenta cake with lemon curd and meringue.
