Basic unchanging pub (17th-c longhouse) of great individuality; old country furniture on flagstones, heating from cast-iron kitchen ranges, old photographs, long-serving plain-talking landlord, locals in favourite corners, well kept Abbeydale ales including a strong house beer (Black Lurcher), lots of bottled beers, simple food on home-made plates (licensees are potters and have a small gallery), may be free roast chestnuts or cheese on the bar, folk music Sun afternoon; no credit cards or mobile phones; well behaved children and dogs welcome (resident lurchers), hill views from front terrace, good walking country, only open Fri evening and all day weekends
