Homely village local with changing beers, fair-priced food and neat colourful garden

There's a genuinely cheerful welcome for both locals and visitors in this village pub which has been owned by the community since 1982 ? it was the first in the country to do this ? and it's been a roaring success ever since. The main room on the left, with grey wainscoting, has sturdy, well varnished furniture including padded country kitchen chairs and cast-iron-framed tables on patterned carpet, a generous window seat, fox hunting prints and a log fire in a brick fireplace. The somewhat smaller room on the right has steeplechase prints, varnished plank panelling and brocaded bar stools on flagstones around the servery; background music, darts and dominoes. Fullers London Pride and Youngs Bitter on handpump with guests such as Oakham Akhenaten and Oldershaw Grantham Stout, four farm ciders, ten wines by the glass (including an english house wine), a perry and winter mulled wine. A few picnic-sets on grass at the front face lime trees on the peaceful village green opposite, while the pergola-covered back terrace and good-sized sheltered garden with its colourful herbaceous border, have seats and picnic-sets (some shade is provided by a tall ash tree).

Last week my friend and I visited this pub. The beer, Youngs, was very good and the food - we had the hand carved ham, egg & chips and the sausages & mash were excellent. A nice country pub run by the community and well worth a visit. Regards, Ross Balaam.

Fantastic food and a great beer garden. I would certainly recommend the pie and also the fresh fish.
