The good pub guide review

This lovely Ivy-clad townhouse hotel sits on the banks of the River Ouse, but also on the edge of the town centre. It's a special place to stay, run with thought and great care, with 24 luxurious bedrooms (some overlook the river) and excellent breakfasts. And while much emphasis is naturally on this side of the business, there's a proper little pubby bar at its heart with a wide mix of customers. This has a log fire, comfortable sofas and low wooden tables on polished floorboards, and Adnams Ghost Ship and two guest ales on handpump. They also have an exceptional wine list (up to 30 by the glass in the bar) and a wine shop where you can taste a selection of wines before you buy. Food is available in the big airy restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the garden, or in the bar/lounge. There are seats and tables on the terrace by the Great Ouse river, and they have their own landing stage.

The good pub guide food review

Creative food includes sandwiches, salt-baked beetroot with mozzarella and pickled walnut purée, fillets of gurnard with clams, samphire, pancetta griddled potatoes and cider sauce, spiced parsnip soup with curry oil, vegan jalfrezi with rice and home-made mango chutney, and puddings such as roast pineapple with coconut ice-cream and Malibu syrup and chocolate cake with salted caramel ice-cream and candied almonds. They also serve afternoon tea (booking required).
