Bustling, cleverly converted pub with fantastic range of real ales including own brews, and well liked food; bedrooms

The 11 changing beers on handpump here have a loyal following. Their own brews include Watermill A Bit'er Ruff, Blackbeard, Collie Wobbles, Dogth Vader, Isle of Dogs, Windermere Blonde, Ruff Justice and W'ruff Night and there are guests such as Coniston Bluebird, Cumbrian Legendary Loweswater Gold and Theakstons Old Peculier. Also, scrumpy cider, a huge choice of foreign bottled beers and 40 malt whiskies. The chatty bar has beams, black leather, wheelback and kitchen or mate's dining chairs around solid tables on tartan carpet, plus a woodburning stove in a stone fireplace. Another room has lots of nice old posters on rough plastered walls, and the interconnected dining rooms, similarly furnished, have flagstones and exposed and painted stone walls; several open fires, darts and board games. There are seats in the gardens and lots to do nearby. Dogs may get free biscuits and water. Readers enjoy staying here.

Stayed in October by chance visit to the lakes. What a gem the watermill is, 15 beers were well kept, the food was just what a english pub should serve and faultless. Bed and breakfast was 5 out of 5. Staff very friendly and helpful. My only problem was a 32 handpump beer festival was starting 2 days AFTER i had left. We will be back in April for the next!

This is my favourite pub in England. Even outside the holiday season the vast range of real ales are always in tip top condition. There is an excellent menu of well cooked satisfying food. The staff are friendly and efficient and I just wish I didn't live 200 miles away.

I agree 100% with the previous comment. We went back in March and I was amazed by this brew pub. The ales they brew are incredible and continue to be one of my favourites. We ordered a beef and gravy sandwich. It was fantastic. What made it so was the gravy is made from their beer and the beef came from their cows fed on the hops. The staff there where very friendly. Its the pub I’d love to be my local.

After reading the comments on the Watermill on Good Pub Guide site I'm afraid I have to disagree. We visited the pub based on the comments on the site, and were disappointed. I tried two of the locally brewed ales, which were ok although not outstanding, but the real let down was the food - we ordered venison casserole and Cumberland sausage with mash. The casserole (£12.95) was nothing more than dry, overcooked meat in gravy, and the whilst the Cumberland sausage was ok, the mash was flavourless and watery, and the veg was entirely without taste. To be honest I would be surprised if any of the other food coming from that kitchen was much better, there were very few people eating in this pub. All in all I'm surprised that our experience differed so greatly from the other posters on the site but would definitely NOT recommend this pub to others.

Omg..........booked in then read the last comment on this site and nearly cancelled! Glad we went and my only problem was having to wait 10 minutes for a table at 7.30pm as it was full on a tuesday night mid september Food was very nice, beef and ale pie to die for said my hubby i had a excellent vegetarian savoury bread and butter dish i am not a veggie but fancied something different. A well stocked wine list and 15 different real ales on, we tried quite a few half pints all in good condition their own brew collie wobbles was divine! The staff were all nice and seemed to be getting on efficiently. Our bedroom was nice and breakfast was perfect. Congratulations for being an un-pretentious English Inn. We will return next month for your steak night (oh yes they have their own herd of cows)

Well worth a visit if you want a tasty home cooked meal with a variety of choices to cater to all needs. There is a wide range of beers brewed onsite, we tried several and they were all excellent. The bar and table service are great and the staff are very friendly and most welcoming. The food arrived within 10 minutes of ordering and all meals were hot, tasty and portion sizes were large. This pub is popular so parking is a challenge but well worth it. Dogs are welcome in the pub and you can even buy gravey bones.

Would not normally comment but so disappointed with the food. Cannot believe you are being advertised in the good pub guide. Just glad we did not take anyone with us as have just moved to the area and are checking out good pubs to recommend and take friends to. Think you need to up your game food wise.
