The good pub guide review

The Marney family had a timber business in this area of Thames Ditton in the last century, and this pub ' and the pond opposite ' were named for them in 1994. There's good walking to be had on the wooded common nearby and the area feels pretty rural given its Greater London location (handy for Hampton Court Palace). It's a friendly place, with a faithful group of regulars. With its low beams, woodburning stove, scrubbed pine tables, pews, wooden chairs and cottagey curtained windows, it's pleasantly country kitchen in style. There's Fullers London Pride, Twickenham Naked Ladies and Youngs Bitter on handpump, 16 wines by the glass, several malt whiskies and perhaps horse-racing on the telly in the corner (like many pubs in the area, Marneys attracts a fair number of sports fans). The seats and wooden tables on the front terrace provide inspiring views over the common, village church and duck pond, and there's more seating on decking in the attractively planted sheltered garden.

The good pub guide food review

Satisfying food includes smoked mackerel pâté with pickles and melba toast, roast beef carpaccio, pea and courgette risotto with basil oil, moule frites, pie (rabbit and bacon or vegan) and mash, seafood linguine, braised featherblade of beef with mash and green beans, and puddings such as sticky toffee pudding or banana parfait with coconut ice-cream, peanut praline and white chocolate shavings.
