300-year-old inn with beams, panelling and open fires in rambling rooms, inventive food and charming garden; cottagey bedrooms

?This pub makes me so happy' is a lovely comment from one of our readers. And so many others agree. It's a gently civilised and particularly well run 18th-c inn, and the neatly kept, beamed front bar has good country furniture on bare boards, a chesterfield in one corner and a fine view beyond the village to the Rother Valley from a seat in the big panelled bow window. High bar chairs line the counter where they keep Arundel Castle, Harveys Best and Skinners Betty Stogs on handpump, 18 wines by the glass, home-made liqueurs and local farm juices. Other rambling beamed rooms have similar furniture on brick floors, rugs and original panelling and there are fresh flowers throughout; background music and board games. When the weather is fine, the leafy, lush and sheltered garden has picnic-sets, day beds, deck chairs and even a hammock, and there's also a charming terrace. The cosy country bedrooms are comfortable and breakfasts are good. Constable and Turner both painted the medieval church with its unusual spire; Petworth mansion and park (National Trust) is nearby.

This is a cracking pub with a lovely garden - you wouldn't know it was there from the road but it is leafy and lush, decked out with daybeds, picnic sets, deck chairs and even a double hammock. There is a good choice of wines by the glass and they keep their Harvey's very well. The food isn't cheap but it is very, very good. If their take on a Ploughmans is on, do try it - the ham is fantastic and the soft cheese comes in a pot, with crushed nuts for soil and radishes they've grown themselves buried in it to look like they are growing - and no it isn't a triumph of style over substance, it tastes fantastic. The pub is very convenient for Petworth House.
