Historic inn in fine town with drinking and dining spaces in character rooms, fresh flowers and candlelight and seats on pretty terraces; warm, TV-free bedrooms

They cleverly cater for all tastes here ? morning coffee in comfortable chairs by the fire, a bar at the back for drinkers and chatters and a separate restaurant for those wanting more formal dining. It's a stylish 15th-c place with plenty of rustic-chic furnishings and an appealing and relaxed atmosphere. There are exposed golden-stone walls, portraits and gilt-edged mirrors on pale paintwork, flagstones, armchairs, scatter cushions on wall seats, stools and elegant wooden dining chairs around all shapes and sizes of table, jugs of fresh flowers and plenty of big stubby candles. Brakspears Oxford Gold, North Cotswold Windrush Ale, Prescott Chequered Flag and Wye Valley Butty Bach on handpump, good wines by the glass served by smiling, courteous staff; daily papers and background music. Wood and metal seats and tables sit on various terraced areas among shrubs and climbers and there are more seats on grass. Bedrooms are individually decorated in country style; two have their own staircases and one is in a converted hayloft. Sudeley Castle is within walking distance and Cheltenham Racecourse is nearby.
