The good pub guide review

People flock to this 18th-c former farmhouse on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales for many reasons: the splendid food, homely and welcoming atmosphere, comfortable accommodation, attractive surroundings' we could go on. The small bar area has a finely worked plaster ceiling incorporating the Wyvill family's coat of arms, a mix of seating and an elaborate stone fireplace with a warm winter fire. A second bar has been refurbished, but has kept the model train on a railway track running around the room. A reception area includes a huge leather sofa with space for eight people, another carved stone fireplace and an old leaded stained-glass church window partition. Both rooms are hung with pictures of local scenes. Theakstons Best and guest beers from Rudgate and Wensleydale are on handpump, plus a good choice of wines by the glass and nine malt whiskies; chess, backgammon and dominoes. There are several large wooden benches under sizeable white parasols for outdoor dining and picnic-sets by a well. The seven smart, comfortable bedrooms make a lovely base for exploring the beautiful area, and breakfasts are generous. Constable Burton Hall is opposite.

The good pub guide food review

The best local, seasonal produce is used in the highly enjoyable food, which includes lunchtime sandwiches, scallops with black pudding, smoked haddock, cod and salmon fishcake with poached egg and hollandaise, beef bourguignon with mash, Egyptian-style aubergine and red pepper stew topped with mozzarella, venison with highlanders pudding, fondant potato and redcurrant and blueberry sauce, lamb shank with mash, vegetable 'posh pot' with camembert, half crispy roast duck with black cherry sauce and pak choi, steak and onion pie with chips, 28-day aged sirloin or fillet steak with a choice of five sauces, and puddings.
