Charming brick tavern - a prime example of what is now an all too rare breed; bedrooms

In summer and at Christmas they hold beer festivals here featuring dozens of beers, alongside festivities that may include vintage ploughing in the field opposite. The companionable bar keeps a fine range of drinks all year: Bishop Nick Ridleys Rite (brewed in Felsted by the landlord's brother) as well as guests from Adnams, Crouch Vale, Green Jack, Mighty Oak, Red Fox, Skinners, Tyne Bank and two weekend guest ales, all tapped from casks in a back cellar. Also, constantly changing ciders from Biddenden, Carter's, Millwhites, Orchard Pig and so forth, and eight wines by the glass. The bar has very traditional brown-painted panelling and wall benches, plain chairs and tables on quarry tiles, with chat and laughter rather than piped music. There's a piano, darts and board games in one side room, and decorative mugs hanging from beams in another. There are picnic-sets out on the sheltered side grass and the garden behind, with a couple of long tables on the front cobbles by the quiet lane. Bedrooms are in a small newish block.

What the licensee says

This traditional wood panelled country pub (Les Routiers Pub of the Year 2009) promises a night in the slow lane, with real ales from Essex breweries drawn by gravity directly from the barrel in the well stocked cellar. The speciality of the house, the Essex Huffer (a large triangular bap generously filled with various local ingredients), is available every lunchtime and evening. In addition, our chef prepares a constantly changing menu comprising of old pub favourites and comtemporary British dishes. In the summer months this can all be enjoyed from one of the two finely kept gardens, ideal for families and children to play in. The relaxed atmosphere and rural environment make a perfect spot to sit back and enjoy the simpler pleasures. The pub is open Mon - Wed noon to 3pm and 5.30pm to midnight; and Thurs - Sun noon to midnight.www.compasseslittleygreen.co.uk

Well I loved it (and so did Buster). If you want a weekend in the country, excellent and breakfast absolutely delicious. 3.5 - far too low a rating.
