The good pub guide review

Fine ornamental red and black brickwork and handsome half-timbering along with generous proportions speak to this pub's status as part of the Grosvenor Estate, but it has no airs and graces: inside, it's warm, charming and atmospheric, attracting a good mix of customers of all ages. There's a lot of interest and individuality in the spacious cream-painted areas that are sectioned by big knocked-through arches. A variety of floor finishes includes wood, quarry tiles, flagstones, black and white tiles, and the richly coloured Turkish rugs look well against these natural materials. Good solid pieces of traditional furniture, plenty of pictures and attractive lighting keep it all cosy. A handsome room has tall bookshelves lining one wall and they keep a good selection of board games. Well trained, attentive staff serve Phoenix Brunning & Price Original, Timothy Taylors Landlord, Weetwood Eastgate and guests such as Big Hand Seren, Salopian Oracle and Timothy Taylors Landlord Dark from a fine-looking bar counter, and they offer 20 wines by the glass from a knowledgeable list, more than 80 whiskies, 30 gins and farm cider. Outside is a large elegant suntrap terrace and a neat lawn with plenty of picnic-sets; the village green is opposite, and the route of a pleasant local walk is available to download from the website. The good pub guide food review

British food with Asian and Mediterranean influences changes frequently, but along with sandwiches might include Blackstick's blue savoury cheesecake, Thai sesame fishcakes with spiced pineapple, carrot and edamame bean salad, chilli and lime marmalade, chicken and pistachio pastillas with apricot chutney and harissa yoghurt, charcuterie plate, king prawn satay with pineapple salsa, rice noodles and toasted peanut salad, grilled bream fillet with oven-roasted red onion, Appleby's cheese, potato and onion pie with home-made baked beans, braised shoulder of lamb with dauphinoise potatoes, red cabbage and red wine sauce, and puddings such as triple chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and bread and butter pudding.
