Good Pub Guide Recommended

Pretty old pub with bar and dining room, an informal and friendly atmosphere and own-brewed beers; bedrooms

The cottage-lined green beside this busy pub is delightful; in good weather, customers sit on the grass here or at picnic-sets on the flower-filled terrace. If you'd like a table, you do need to arrive early as they only take table reservations from October to March. The focal point of the little beamed main bar is the open woodburning stove in a brick inglenook surrounded by polished horsebrasses, and there are just a few rustic tables with benches, simple wooden chairs, a window seat and a long cushioned wall bench. The walls are hung with fish prints and a stuffed tiger's head, and a couple of hunting horns hang above the long bar counter. As well as their own-brewed Beachy Head Legless Rambler and Parsons Porter, they keep Gun Project Babylon Pale Ale, Harveys Best, Long Man Long Blonde and St Austell Tribute on handpump, nine wines by the glass and local gin and cider. Down a step on the right is a small room with an exceptionally fine high-backed curved settle, a couple of other elderly settles and nice old chairs and wooden tables on coir carpeting; on the walls are an ancient map of Eastbourne and Beachy Head and photographs of the pub. The dining room to the left of the main bar has a cream woodburner and hunting prints. Bedrooms are comfortable and breakfasts good. The walks to the coast and along the clifftops of the Seven Sisters and up to Belle Tout Lighthouse and Beachy Head are splendid.
