Fine manor house with smartly pubby atmosphere, top quality food, exceptional wine list, real ales and professional, friendly service; luxury bedrooms

There are delightful views over the adjacent River Hodder and across towards the lovely high moors of the Forest of Bowland from the riverside bar and adjacent terrace at this elegant manor house hotel. The civilised bar rooms have handsome old wood furnishings, including antique settles, oak gate-leg tables and sonorous clocks, set off beautifully against powder blue walls neatly hung with big appealing prints. The pubby main bar has roaring log fires in attractive stone fireplaces and heavy curtains on sturdy wooden rails; one area has a selection of newspapers and magazines, local maps and guidebooks. There's a piano for anyone who wants to play, and board games. Early evening sees a cheerful bustle that later settles to a more tranquil and relaxing atmosphere. Drinks include a marvellous wine list of around 230 wines with 17 by the glass (reception has a good wine shop), 24 whiskies, eight gins, organic ginger beer, lemonade and fruit juices and Moorhouses Blond Witch, Timothy Taylors Landlord and Tirril Kirkstone Gold on handpump. The bedrooms are lovely (several have open fires), and there's also a self-catering holiday house. They own several miles of trout, salmon and sea trout fishing on the River Hodder; picnic hamper on request.

Stayed at Whitewell mid week twice now; once Room 16 (brillant location, corner, river facing) and once upstairs front (older, but faultless). Food here is just superb, atmosphere relaxed, countryside exceptional and quiet, and warming welcome and great staff. No wonder it is fully booked weekends - I have tried months ahead with no joy. A place that will stay long in the memory for all reasons.

Regular visitor to the Inn at Whitewell - beautiful location and tastefully decorated inn. Food is not cheap but neither is it expensive given it's excellent quality and local sourcing. Staff are friendly and accommodation fabulous: book it if you can. Oscar the Golden Retriever approves - he particularly likes crossing the river by the stepping stones (after a visit to the Inn, naturally).

Nice pub shame about the food we had a BBQ last Friday 16/08/13 it was a large frying pan! No charcoal no wood! The burgers were 10p rubbish and not an onion to be seen or bugger buns or lettuce or hot dog rolls this is the worst BBQ iv have ever seen not even a tomato why did they charge £10 each for this rubbish.

wrong pub sorry!
