The good pub guide review
City's second-oldest pub, on the quayside just a few minutes' stroll from the castle; long narrow room with elaborate coffered ceiling, stained-glass counter screens and fine mirrors with tulip lamps on curly brass mounts (matching the great ceiling candelabra), long green built-in leather wall seat flanked by narrow tables, old photos of Newcastle and plenty of caricatures, six handpumps serving well curated local and northern ales such as Abbeydale and Hadrian Border Tyneside Blonde, may do sandwiches, heating from fat low-level pipes, music from vintage record player; well behaved children in front snug till 6pm, open all day (midnight Fri, Sat) and can get packed at peak times.
