17th-c country dining pub with heavily beamed character main rooms, candlelit tables and a big open fire, also some newer areas, up to three changing ales, more than 20 gins, good choice of malt whiskies and decent selection of wines by the glass, good generously served food from sandwiches and pub standards up including Tues steak, Weds pie and Thurs burger nights, free minibus for eight or more local diners, friendly helpful service; background and some live music; children and dogs welcome, disabled access/loos, seats on small front lawn and heated back terrace, good walks below the downs, open all day Sun till 9pm, closed Mon.
