Prospect of Whitby

The good pub guide review

Claims to be oldest pub on the Thames dating from 1520 (although largely rebuilt after much later fire), was known as the Devil's Tavern and has a colourful history (Pepys and Dickens used it regularly and Turner came for weeks at a time to study the river views) ' tourists love it; L-shaped bare-boards bar with plenty of beams, flagstones and panelling, Greene King and four changing ales served from fine pewter counter, good choice of wines by the glass, bar food up and more formal restaurant upstairs; hard-working staff; Weds quiz; children welcome (only if eating after 5.30pm), unbeatable river views towards Docklands from tables on waterfront courtyard, open (and food) all day.
