Striking 17th-c country house hotel popular for weddings and the like; pubby bar with big windsor armchairs and sturdy oak settles around traditional cast-iron-framed tables, open fires and remarkable 1946 mural of Dickensian characters by JTY Gilroy (known for his Guinness adverts), big windows looking on to extensive lawn, a couple of real ales including Timothy Taylors, good gin and wine lists, enjoyable bar and restaurant food, afternoon teas, friendly staff; background music; children and dogs (in bar and bedrooms) welcome, attractively laid-out split-level garden with teak tables and play area, open all day.
