Olde Cheshire Cheese

The good pub guide review

Best to visit this 17th-c former chophouse outside peak times as it can be packed (early evening especially); soaked in history with warren of old-fashioned unpretentious rooms, high beams, bare boards and old built-in black benches, Victorian paintings on dark brown walls, big open fires, tiny snug and steep stone steps down to unexpected series of cosy areas and secluded alcoves, Sam Smiths beers, all-day pubby food, look out for Polly the parrot (now stuffed) who entertained distinguished guests for over 40 years; children allowed in eating area at lunchtime only, closed Sun.
