The good pub guide review

Popular black and white pub with big bay windows ' as much a part of the village landscape as the fells behind it; chatty cheerful bar with plenty of separate areas, flagstones, log fires (one beneath an impressive mantelbeam), police truncheons, walking sticks, photos, prints, bric-a-brac and farm tools, also attractive upstairs dining room with a beamed barn ceiling; Hawkshead and five regularly changing ales on handpump, perhaps from Barngates, Bowness Bay, Coniston, Cumbrian Legendary and Fell, several wines by the glass, 25 malt whiskies, 30 gins and farm cider, well regarded pubby food including sandwiches and pies; background music; walkers, children and dogs (in bar) welcome, sheltered riverside garden with picnic-sets under parasols, plus more in second garden and good-sized back terrace, comfortable bedrooms and generous breakfasts, open all day.
