The good pub guide review
If the rustic charm of this restored 17th-c mill combined with contemporary luxuries weren't enough to win you over, the large choice of ales, wines and spirits and exemplary food surely will. The rambling bar has plenty of character and is full of nooks and crannies. Some cosy side areas have banquettes heaped with cushions and rugs, nicely spaced attractive old tables and chairs, and candles in elegant iron holders, all giving a feeling of real intimacy; also, old hunting prints, country landscapes and a couple of big log fires. You'll find a beer named for them (from Moorhouses), Little Valley Withens Pale Ale and a couple of changing guests on handpump, 29 wines by the glass from a wide list, 22 malt whiskies and 20 gins. There's also an upstairs restaurant; background music. The pleasant heated terrace has plenty of seats and tables, including a sweet 'tea shed', and the building is prettily floodlit at night. To make the most of the lovely surrounding countryside, our readers regularly stay in the 11 stylish, well equipped bedrooms; breakfasts are good and hearty. Shibden Hall, star of the recent TV series Gentleman Jack about Anne Lister, is nearby.

Highly accomplished food includes lunchtime sandwiches, cauliflower bhaji with roasted cauliflower velouté, guinea fowl with pork jowl bacon, celeriac, apple and truffle, halibut with kohlrabi, girolle mushrooms and brown shrimp and chicken butter sauce, squash gnocchi with tunworth cheese, sage, burnt butter and ramson buds, burger with toppings, beetroot slaw and skinny fries, cod loin with crushed ginger and spring onion potatoes and summer vegetables, pork belly with crispy pig head, langoustine, baby turnips, pork fat potatoes, toasted almonds and sherry sauce, and puddings such as damson iced parfait with apple, treacle and caramelised crumpet and white chocolate tart with raspberry, sorrel and torched chocolate; they also offer afternoon tea and a seven-course taster menu.
