The good pub guide review
This appealing waterside spot by the Bridgewater Canal has a large open-plan ground floor with a friendly, informal atmosphere and groups of high tables and chairs, and a more formal restaurant upstairs. The big front terrace has plenty of wood and chrome tables and chairs set around a fountain, and picnic-sets overlooking the canal basin. Throughout there's an appealing variety of dining chairs around dark wooden tables on rugs and shiny floorboards, hundreds of interesting prints and posters on bare brick or painted walls, old stone bottles, church candles and house plants on windowsills and tables, plus bookshelves, armchairs and large mirrors over open fires. Efficient, friendly staff serve Phoenix Brunning & Price Original and Weetwood Cheshire Cat plus up to eight quickly changing guest ales on handpump from breweries such as Beartown, Brightside, Rudgate, Squawk and Titanic and local craft brewer Beatinikz, as well as farm cider, 16 wines by the glass, 40 gins and 50-plus malt whiskies.
The good pub guide food review
A wide range of popular food includes 'light bites', five-spiced duck leg with spring onion, cucumber, hoisin sauce and pancakes, halloumi fries with tomato salsa, cheshire cheese, potato and onion pie with carrot purée, kale and gravy, braised shoulder of lamb with mashed potatoes, red cabbage and green beans, fish pie, pork and leek sausages with mash, and puddings such as crème brûlée with shortbread and hot waffle with caramelised banana and honeycomb ice-cream.
