The good pub guide review

This relaxed 16th-c south Norfolk pub has a choice of cosy nooks in which to eat and drink. In fine weather there are painted seats and tables on an outside terrace, as well as a secluded garden and a play area for children. The best place to sit on a cold day is on a comfortably cushioned sofa in front of the woodburning stove in a huge brick fireplace in the heavily beamed, quarry-tiled bar room; there are also stools by a low chunky wooden table, and newspapers and magazines. The public bar on the left has a nice long table and panelled settle on an old brick floor in one alcove, a pool table, and more tables and chairs towards the back near a dartboard. The simply furnished, beamed dining room has another big brick fireplace. The walls are hung with paintings by local artists. Adnams Broadside and Southwold and guests such as Humpty Dumpty Little Sharpie, Three Blind Mice Nothing Rhymes with Orange and Winters Best on handpump or tapped from the cask, ten wines by the glass and seven malt whiskies; background music, board games, dominoes and cards.

The good pub guide food review

Rewarding food cooked by the landlord includes sandwiches, chicken liver parfait with white port and juniper berries and red onion marmalade, beetroot-cured salmon pâté with root vegetable slaw, spinach and ricotta dumplings with olive and rosemary polenta and tomato compote, rib-eye steak diane, grilled sea bream with braised fennel, fennel velouté and brown shrimp, Hyderabad lamb shank with rice, and puddings such as sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vegan chocolate brownie with dairy-free ice-cream.
