The good pub guide review

Set on the green of a pretty Teesdale village, this is a genuine country pub with warmly welcoming and helpful licensees who get the basics of old-fashioned hostelry right every time: great food and ale and a good night's sleep, in a timelessly relaxing atmosphere. The cheerful, simply furnished beamed bar has a partly wooden floor (elsewhere it's carpeted), a good winter log fire, cushioned wall seats and local photographs and country pictures in various alcoves and recesses; look out for the mural of a fox enjoying a jug of ale. Three local ales on handpump include Tirril 1883 and there is a decent selection of gins and malt whiskies too. There are seats outside on a terrace and quoits. The bright, clean and comfortable bedrooms make a good base for exploring the area ' Cotherstone is on the edge of the North Pennine AONB and close to the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and there are fine surrounding walks. Disabled access.

The good pub guide food review

Expertly home-cooked and good value food is made from local ingredients including Teesdale lamb and beef, Cotherstone cheese from the village creamery, and eggs, herbs and vegetables from 'dad's garden'. Dishes might include warm bacon, wensleydale cheese and red apple salad, baked pot of prawns, leeks and mushrooms in Cotherstone cheese cream with herb crust, steak, black pudding and ale pie with chips, lambs liver in gravy with mustard mash and crispy bacon, French vegetable bake, gammon, tomato and cheese melt, and puddings such as chocolate cream crunch and sticky toffee pudding.
